Tooth Extractions

Painless Tooth Extractions in San Diego County

The word “extraction” can be intimidating to some patients, but you can rest assured that tooth extractions are an extremely common and safe dental procedure. In fact, in many cases where the tooth is damaged or infected, extraction is necessary to preserve a patient’s oral health and overall wellbeing. At A+ Family Dentistry, we want our patients to be as comfortable as possible with the treatment we provide, including tooth extractions. Learn more about what to expect during this common dental procedure.

Tooth Extraction Basics

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Tooth extractions are typically performed by a dentist or oral surgeon, and they are usually considered to be a last resort after all other options have been exhausted. There are many reasons why a tooth extraction might be necessary, including:

  • The tooth is severely decayed
  • The tooth is infected
  • The tooth is impacted (stuck in the gums or jawbone)
  • The tooth is crowded and needs to be removed to support a broader dental treatment plan

Tooth extractions are also sometimes performed in preparation for radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Do Tooth Extractions Take a Long Time?

Most tooth extractions are quick and easy, taking only a few minutes to complete. However, some extractions may be more complicated and may take longer to perform. On average, this procedure takes about 30 minutes per tooth. If you need a tooth extraction, your dentist or oral surgeon will let you know how long the procedure is expected to take. They will also let you know if there is anything you need to do to prepare for the procedure.

Caring for Your Mouth After a Tooth Extraction

It is important to take care of your mouth after a tooth extraction. Although your dentist will provide you with specific instructions for your care, some typical best practices include:

  • Resting. You should rest for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Taking it easy. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Eating soft foods. Stick to soft foods for the first few days after the procedure.
  • Brushing your teeth. Be careful when brushing your teeth near the extraction site. Gently brush the area with a soft toothbrush.
  • Rinsing your mouth. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to help keep the area clean and reduce swelling.
  • Don't smoke or use a straw. It's best to avoid these activities for at least 24 hours after the tooth extraction.
  • Take recommended medication. Take any recommended or prescribed medication for pain as instructed.
